to Geospatial Data Standards
Standards
for Spatial Data Facilities, Infrastructure and Environment
(SDSFIE) is the result of seven plus years of
research performed by the United States Army Corp of
Engineers. SDSFIE enables a user to search, retrieve,
and compile a complex attribute data model for numerous
spatial data layers. Users of SDSFIE are given a number
of export options including but not limited to Access,
dbf and recently ESRI geodatabases.
The Arkansas Geographic Information Office
(AGIO) began exploring the usefulness of the SDSFIE
in January of 2002. After several months of research
the AGIO concluded that SDSFIE would be a useful tool
for the Arkansas State Land Information Board (ASLIB)
to adopt. This would enable the state to standardize
simple and complex spatial databases, and provide a
common standard for all those creating spatial data.
The AGIO presented its findings to the
ASLIB at the March 19th ASLIB meeting. The ASLIB concluded
the Arkansas GIS User community should review SDSFIE
and determine its usefulness. The AGIO presented SDSFIE
to the Arkansas GIS Users Forum on March 22nd and a
task force was formed.
Over the coming months the SDSFIE Task
Force will review the usefulness of the SDSFIE freeware.
The task force will review the ease of use, cross-walking
legacy databases and over all functionality. The results
of the SDSFIE Task Force will be presented to the ASLIB
at the August Meeting.
